Ki-Young, a college student, is on runaway trip due to taking the lead of resistance activity. He steals in a coal mining town in the crisis of closing where he barely becomes an odd-jobber in a briquette factory. Young-Suk, a cafe's waitress, stops selling tickets since she is attracted by him. As Seong-Cheol, only son of factory's owner hears his mother's death, he assaults Young-Suk who he has loved. Ki-young tries to make him stop but involves in the fight. He is caught by an inspector who has watched over him and tortured. He is released of above suspicion but his identity is revealed. As Ki-Young prepares to leave for refuge, Young-Suk decides to depart the coal mining town with him. But she meets Seong-Cheol when she went to the cafe to take her baggage. Young-Suk kills Seong-Cheol who wants to hold her. She is pulled to the police leaving Ki-Young.
